Observations and Questions

So it's been forever since I did a non-"catching you up on my life" post that also actually said things of importance to me. Time to change that!

Question: Why is President Bush just now (as in Thursday) going to visit the flooding in IA? I mean, the waters crested DAYS AGO. Meanwhile, he was spending time telling Congress to allow oil drilling on US reserves... It's getting kinda crazy around the US - I mean, we're paying $4+/gal gas, and soon there will be people unable to buy food because all the crops are covered by floods, driving prices up a ton. They actually called the flooding "the Katrina of the Midwest" on TV tonight. Those are scary words, seeing as Katrina areas are still nowhere near recovered. I'm glad I'm not in IA dealing with a flooded basement, but we're all going to feel the food price increase. I know God is in control, but it's hard to grasp what He might be up to here...

Observation: Olympic paint is not great. Valspar paint is WAY worth the few extra dollars per gallon. As some of you know, I just painted my living room and dining room. The latter went smoothly and painlessly - my "orange ice" Valspar paint was thick, non-drippy, covered evenly, washed off my brush easily, and required almost no touch-ups later. The former looks good now that it's done, but the "morning mist" blue Olympic paint was thin, drippy, hard to spread on the walls, dried on my brush and roller insanely fast, and wouldn't wash off well later. I re-opened the can MANY times to touch spots up, too.

Question: What is wrong with peoples' tastes? I adore watching "So You Think You Can Dance" on TV, but I disagreed with the judges on almost every pair tonight! I think the worst moment was when Nigel told one couple that their salsa "needed to be sleazier." Yeah, that's right, it's no longer enough to wear almost nothing and dance like you need to get a room... Oh well!

Observation: The dancers are really talented this season! I haven't found my favorite yet (I'm still learning names), but I may have trouble choosing. I find it funny that there's a Benji (winner from 2 seasons ago who was my absolute fave) and an "I forget her name, but it's Benji's sister" (from last season, in the final 4) look-alike in this season. At least I see the resemblance. Maybe others don't.

Well, I'll post some pics of the new paint job once I've finished getting things all organized. For now, I have a baby shower to plan! (My sis-in-law's shower is this Saturday in Rockford.) Feel free to post your reflections in my comments or on my facebook wall!

TAG! I'm it! The "5 Things" Game

I felt like that last post was way too gloomy to leave up for long, especially since I'm feeling so much better right now. I was actually happy for the most recent engaged couple. Here's something more light hearted.

The rules of the game get posted at the beginning.
1. Each player answers the questions about themselves.
2. At the end of the post, the player then tags five people and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know they’ve been tagged and asking them to read the player’s blog.
3. Let the person who tagged you know when you’ve posted your answer.

Q. What were you doing 5 years ago today?
Early summer of 2003, home in Springfield.
1. Sleeping in a lot.
2. Working at West Lake Animal Hospital.
3. (Previously this was missing... MY BAD!) Hanging with RHS peeps.
4. Working at Bunn-O-Matic
5. Starting to look at the application process for vet school.

Q. 5 things on your to do list today.
1. Thank you notes from graduation.
2. Clean up in the kitchen/rest of the apartment.
3. Look up baby shower games, since I was informed by my mom that I'm hosting one of my sis-in-law's showers in a couple weekends.
4. Make dinner for Ryan and Karen (if the schedule works out).
5. Put pictures up on facebook.

Q. 5 snacks you enjoy
The hardest question is 5 snacks I DON'T enjoy!
1. Mrs. May's nut snacks (especially cashew and tropical fruit ones)
2. fruit smoothies (especially Coldstone)
3. Ice cream (especially Coldstone and unique stands like Dairy Dream in Libertyville and Whippy Dip in Decorah)
4. gummy candy
5. Reese's Whips candy bars. SOOOOO yummy!

Q. 5 things you would do if you were a billionare
1. Pay off my school loans
2. Buy a VW Passat (NOT wagon - sedan)
3. Give a bunch to Christian Veterinary Mission, IVCF, the new building fund at Cornerstone in Ames, KLOVE, set up a scholarship for IL people at IAState's CVM etc.
4. Invest in my future
5. Get Walter a really nice cat climb thing (they're soooo expensive!)

Q. 5 jobs you have had
1. Walking beans (I don't recommend it, but I made a ton of $$ fast)
2. Mailroom at Bunn-O-Matic and at AmAg/IGF crop insurance
3. Filing at PepsiCo (I think 5 days total - it was a temp agency thing)
4. Kennel worker and receptionist positions at West Lake Animal Hospital
5. Summer Vet Student Intern/Pet Nurse at Banfield in Gurnee

Q. 5 people you want to tag
1. Ruthi - because she hasn't blogged in years. Literally.
2. Anybody who actually reads this. That should be about 4 more. You can post it on Facebook if you don't blog.

MAKE IT STOP!!

I would just like to make one request of everyone:
STOP ASKING IF RYAN AND I ARE ENGAGED YET!!!

Trust me, if we are, you'll probably know very quickly. In the mean time, I'm having a very difficult time not strangling people. This is my own heart issue, and I know it's not good, so don't take it personally. Just know that I'm having a very hard time hearing about the rest of the world being/getting engaged. This issue (which had been under better control previously) is a VERY sensitive subject with me of late. I just can't escape it, 'cause I don't even have work to keep my mind off of it until I start on July 1st. I'm quite honestly feeling like a bit of a failure, which I'm sure makes no sense considering that I've just graduated from vet school. Guys: it's complicated girl crap. I doubt you'd understand. Girls: you may or may not understand, but you can at least empathize - I mean the whole world is screaming at me "WHY AREN'T YOU ENGAGED??! OH, and by the way, three more couple who are younger than you and dating less than half the time you and Ryan have are engaged now. You must really suck!!"

SUMMARY: Don't ask. We'll tell you. I am impatient, and it sucks the joy out of life.
